FASTER PROCESSING FOR RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS:
The Spanish government is committed to improving the processing times for residency applications, particularly under the arraigo (Spanish roots) and family reunification programs.
- Target Processing Time: The new updates aim to resolve residency applications within 3-6 months, a significant improvement from previous delays.
- Digitalization of Procedures: In 2025, more applications can now be completed online, reducing the need for in-person appointments. This includes uploading documents, paying fees, and tracking application statuses through Spain’s new unified immigration portal.
UPDATES TO CITIZENSHIP APPLICATIONS:
Spain has clarified and modified requirements for those seeking Spanish citizenship by residency, descent, or marriage.
- Streamlined Documentation for Descendants of Spaniards: Applicants who are children or grandchildren of Spanish nationals no longer need to provide redundant certifications if their family lineage has already been registered in Spain. (Spanish of origin)
- New Language Test Exemptions: Citizens of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, and Sephardic Jews who qualify for citizenship are now exempt from the DELE A2 Spanish language test if they can prove long-term residence or educational qualifications in Spanish-speaking institutions.
Additionally, citizenship applications can now be tracked more transparently via the Ministry of Justice’s online platform, offering real-time updates on the application’s status.
NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR REFUGEES AND STATELESS INDIVIDUALS:
Spain continues to emphasize inclusivity for vulnerable groups while ensuring adherence to international standards.
- Replacement Documentation: Refugees and stateless persons who lack birth certificates or criminal records from their country of origin can now use the official certification issued by the Ministry of Interior as a valid substitute.
- Expanded Protections: Spain has increased protections and streamlined pathways to long-term residency for individuals under asylum or subsidiary protection, making it easier for them to integrate into Spanish society.
SIMPLIFIED WORK VISA CATEGORIES:
Responding to labor shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, technology, and agriculture, Spain has introduced simplified work visa categories in 2025:
- Sector-Specific Visas: These visas prioritize professions in high demand. For example, healthcare workers can now fast-track their visa applications with fewer administrative hurdles, such as waived recognition requirements for certain qualifications.
- Digital Nomad Visa Enhancements: Introduced in 2023, the digital nomad visa has received updates, allowing remote workers to renew their visas every two years instead of annually. The income threshold for eligibility has also been slightly lowered to accommodate more professionals.
THE GOLDEN VISA PROGRAM:
With concerns that this program has contributed to rising housing costs, especially in major cities, and based upon the fact that 94% of these visas which were linked to real estate investments, exacerbating housing market pressures, the Spanish government’s has taken a decision to abolish the Golden-Visa residence program as of 03 April 2025.
STRICTER RESIDENCY RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS:
While initial residency applications have become more efficient, Spain has introduced stricter requirements for residency renewals:
- Proof of Economic Stability: Renewals now require more robust evidence of income or financial resources, particularly for non-lucrative visas.
- Residency Continuity: Foreign nationals must provide documentation proving that they have not spent excessive periods outside Spain to renew long-term residency permits.
ADDRESSING BACKLOGS IN THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE (JURA DE NACIONALIDAD):
The process for completing the jura de nacionalidad (oath of allegiance) has been facing significant delays in cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
In 2025, the government has pledged to increase staffing in Civil Registry offices and launch a pilot program for scheduling jura appointments online, alleviating bottlenecks and expediting the final steps for citizenship applicants.
NEW LEGAL RESOURCES FOR DENIED APPLICATIONS:
Applicants who face denials for residency or citizenship now have clearer avenues to appeal:
- Digital Appeal Submission: Individuals can file appeals through the new immigration portal, ensuring faster response times.
Extended Deadlines for Contested Cases: For administrative and judicial appeals, deadlines have been extended to allow applicants more time to prepare their cases.
WHEN WILL THESE UPDATES COME INTO EFFECT?:
The updates for these Spanish immigration policies, including the termination of the Golden Visa program, will come into effect on April 3, 2025.
This date marks the deadline for submitting any new Golden Visa applications. After this, the program will officially end, and no further applications will be accepted. This decision follows the announcement published in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) on January 3, 2025, which granted a three-month transition period before the policy change takes effect.
If you’re considering applying for the Golden Visa or preparing for other changes to Spanish immigration rules, it’s essential to act before this deadline.
