The Spanish government approves exchange of driving licences for UK nationals who reside in Spain.
By order of the Spanish chief of traffic:
After more than two years of negotiations, the Spanish Council of Ministers has approved an agreement in the form of an exchange of verbal notices between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on reciprocal recognition and the exchange of permits national driving licences, and on the exchange of information on traffic offenses in terms of road safety.
Among the details of this agreement, is the provisional application (only related to the permit card) from Thursday, March 16, 2023. Therefore, holders of a British driving license can drive in Spain for a period of up to 6 months from the aforementioned date as long as the license is valid and in force.
This new agreement allows current UK residents of Spain who have not yet changed their lecience within the initial time limit of 6 months from when their residency commenced, to do so now, and obtain a valid Spanish driving licience in exchange for their UK licience.
