Goodbye to Traditional Passports in the European Union: Here’s How Entering and Exiting Europe Will Work Starting in November 2024.
A new Entry and Exit System (EES) for the European Union will involve the use of biometric data, such as facial recognition or fingerprints.
On November 10, 2024, the new Entry and Exit System (EES) for the European Union will come into effect, marking a significant change in how passports are used. The EES is an automated IT system that allows the registration of nationals from non-EU countries who are traveling for short stays, each time they cross the external borders of any country using the system.

Goodbye to traditional passports in the european union:
PASSPORT STAMPS WILL DISAPPEAR:
With the digitalization of passports, the traditional stamps will disappear. Additionally, this system helps prevent irregular migration by systematically detecting travelers who have exceeded their authorized stay. A short stay is defined as 90 days within a 180-day period, calculated across all European countries using this system.
This system was originally proposed in April 2016 to meet the objectives of the European Security Agenda and the Migration Agenda, particularly regarding border management. It was approved by the European Parliament and Council in 2017, but the pandemic delayed its implementation.
Besides the usual data found in any travel document (full name, date of birth, etc.), the system will record the date and place of each entry and exit, facial images and fingerprints, and any denied entry incidents. Refusing to provide any of this data will result in the traveler being denied entry to the countries using the EES.
OTHER EU PROJECTS IN PROGRESS:
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is another initiative in progress for entering Europe.
Authorities emphasize that ETIAS is a travel authorization, not a visa. This permit is aimed at citizens from visa-exempt countries like Mexico, the United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Japan. However, ETIAS won’t be implemented until early next year, so travel will continue as usual for now.
Additionally, the United Kingdom plans to introduce the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for EU countries next year. This authorization must be requested prior to entry, costs about €12, and will be linked to the traveler’s passport.
