CONTINUOUS RESIDENCE FOR FIVE YEARS:

To qualify for Long-Term Residence, applicants must demonstrate five years of legal and uninterrupted residence in Spain.

While this is the primary route, other conditions also qualify, such as:

  • Receiving a contributory retirement pension within Spain’s Social Security system.
  • Holding an EU Blue Card and residing for five continuous years in the EU, with the last two years in Spain.
  • Receiving a contributory permanent disability pension or analogous benefits in Spain.
  • Being born in Spain and legally residing for at least three consecutive years before turning 18.
  • Former Spanish nationals who have lost their nationality.
  • Individuals under public guardianship in Spain for five consecutive years before turning 18.
  • Stateless individuals, refugees, or beneficiaries of subsidiary protection with recognized status in Spain.
  • Significant contributions to Spain’s economic, scientific, or cultural progress, as validated by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security and the Ministry of the Interior.

ABSENCE OF CRIMINAL RECORD:

Applicants must possess a clean criminal and police record. Any existing records must be cleared before application.

ECONOMIC MEANS REQUIREMENT:

Unlike other permits, proving economic means is not a prerequisite for the Long-Term Residence application. While optional, applicants may submit work contracts or evidence of savings.

Applicants do not need to show prior employment or contributions to the Social Security system.
