How to enter spain as a tourist and apply for a student visa:
ENTERING AS A TOURIST AND APPLYING FOR A STUDENT VISA:
Not too long ago, it was impossible to enter Spain as a tourist and apply for a student visa. This type of authorization had always been conditioned by obtaining a prior visa, but for a few years (specifically since September 2018), it is possible to enter Spain and during your tourist stay in our country, apply for this residence permit for studies directly here.
In order to make this application in Spain, it is necessary to meet a series of requirements. The most important one is the deadline to apply for this card or residence permit for studies.
WHEN DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR THE STUDENT VISA:
Here it is very important to count the days very well. Once you are in Spain, you must apply at least one month before the expiration date of your legal stay situation. If you do not respect this deadline, the Foreigners Office will reject your application and you will lose the opportunity to obtain this residence permit for studies.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE STUDENT VISA:
Once we have clear the deadline and the exact moment in which we have to apply for the student visa, let’s review the requirements that we must meet.
- To have been admitted to a public or private institution, authorized either at the state or regional level.
- To have financial means, at the rate of 100% of the IPREM on a monthly basis. In this year 2023, the IPREM is equivalent to an amount of 600 Euros per month.
- To have a public or private medical insurance policy contracted with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain, and it must cover all the risks normally covered for nationals. This medical insurance must be maintained throughout the validity of the residence permit for studies.
These are the main requirements to apply for this residence permit for studies.
When the stay of the studies that you want to take in Spain exceeds six months, you must also prove that you do not suffer from any diseases with repercussions on public health as well as the lack of criminal records, if you are an adult.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE STUDENT VISA:
The application for the residence permit for studies must be made at the Foreigners Office that corresponds to you.
Applications must be submitted by the student himself, in person or by proxy, or through electronic means.
Once the Foreigners Office has evaluated and studied the application, together with the documentation, it will issue a resolution.
If the resolution is favourable, you must request your physical card at the corresponding police station.
On the other hand, if the resolution that is issued is a denial of the application for the Residence Permit for Studies, you can appeal, to try to correct any error in the application.
ATTENTION! You must keep in mind that the possibility of applying for a stay permit while in Spain is only possible for the holder of this authorization. Family members are excluded, so they must apply for the corresponding visa at the Spanish Consulate in the country of origin or the country where they have legal residence.
