Is migrating to The EU becomming more complex while some EU countries are building fences around their borders with non-EU countries?
An increasing number of illegal migrants are reaching the European Union and Schengen Area Member States, has made the states to take different approaches to tackle this entry activity through their borders.
Approximately 13 per cent, or 1,535 kilometres, of EU external land borders have been fenced off, in 2022 and further borders are being fenced to decrease illegal entries.
The first border fences in Europe were built by Spain in the early 1990s, to prevent irregular migration into its enclaves in Morocco – Ceuta and Melilla. Since then, and essentially due to situations like the migratory crisis of 2015/2016, the installation of fences across Europe has been increased.
These new and increasing developments on migration into Europe, including the end of the Golden-Visa in a growing number of countries, demonstrate that EU countries are now limiting entry of third-country nationals.
